The Midlife Crisis Queen meets the NYC producer

I had a funny midlife experience last week.

When I got home from my writing group meeting, I had an e-mail from a producer at The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet, FOX network. She said “they were working on a segment about Female Midlife Crisis” and were looking for “personal stories of women who have done drastic things to change their lives.”

I called her up and then I swear, I met the person with the shortest attention span in the history of womankind! She did answer her own phone, I’ll give her credit for that, but she kept asking me questions and then said immediately, “Can you hold a minute?” She would then switch to another line. How did I know? Because I could hear her entire conversation with a male waiter telling his story about how he abuses customers he doesn’t like.

This happened a few times until I slowly got the picture. She really had no interest in midlife. She was probably flirting with the male waiter, and besides how could she possibly relate to a midlife crisis? She’s maybe 35 years old tops, and thinks she knows exactly how her life is going to go. Remember that know-it-all boredom of being in your 20’s and 30’s?

Go check out what they came up with for their segment on women and midlife crisis

Hello, is everybody out there “on the prowl and playing the field”? Typical go-for-the-gutter mainstream shlock!!! Silly me, I thought they might actually be interested in providing some positive and useful information for those of us struggling through major midlife change.

Per usual, midlife turned into a negative image of a woman who ignores her children, dates younger men and dresses in “slutty pants.” Then dumb, dumb Mike says something stupid like: “You aren’t really advising women to go through a midlife crisis, are you?” Like we all have a choice!!! Where do they find human beings that are so out of touch with real life?

This show seems to be taking as its purpose the furthering of most misunderstandings and misconceptions about midlife and aging. They could have taken this same topic and made a positive, encouraging segment for women everywhere. But instead they made fun of it all, like we’re all a bunch of idiots.

I’m sorry, but they are the idiots! They are the ones contributing to the problems of this world instead of providing useful solutions. There are people literally dying for some peace and understanding in midlife. The suicide rate is mounting, and so what do the folks on TV do? They trivialize and laugh at us! They have the power to do so much and they go-for-the gutter instead. I hope they realize how ugly and irresponsible they appear to this expert on midlife transitioning.

It is sad to see the power (and opportunity!) to teach so miserably misused. Thanks for speaking out, Midlife Crisis Queen!

In my experience, as well as some of my colleges, many time all the press is looking for is just the right ’sound bite’. So take a big breath, and be grateful you were contacted, and be prepared next time.

Congratulations on being contacted by them, you gotta be doing something great!

Good for you! Sounds like they weren’t taking you seriously, and I think lots of mid-life women get that feeling from a whole host of characters. Screw ‘em!

I was also horrified by this segment when I saw it. I referenced your experience in my own blog post about the various coverage of female midlife crisis:
